AMR // Publication Layout // Stage 2

I have gone through and edited all the points that were made in the feedback. I really helped to come back to the publication with a fresh eye as I started to see other areas that needed to be tweaked slightly that I hadn't noitced before.

I justified the colums as well throughout the article which has made a huge amount of difference. Some of the spreads have been kept the same, with minor changes, but others have changed drastically and are much better for it. Overall the article reads a lot smoother than it did before.

I have isolated the quote that before, was in between two columns of text, it reads much better and looks better.

I have swapped around the pages here and added in the logo of Audiojack's Label because when the article was printed out before I didn't feel there was enough on the page, especially considering it was the opening page to the article.

I have re-arranged the height, number and position of the columns so it is more readable, also I have removed the two lines at the two of the paragraphs that were slightly isolated.

I tried to keep this page as similar to the previous design as this was one of the pages I was happiest with.

I had a few problems trying to lay out the rest of the article, I had to swap the images around.

I have added in an extra column here to make it more readable, and shortened the height of them.

I have swapped the pages around, and isolated the quote so there is more text on the second of the pages, making the overall spread more balanced.

Overall I am very happy with the development of the publication. I have designed the contents page and just need to add in the advert for the app, the advert for the music blog and the ad for the next issue with an image of the chosen cover design.

AMR // Printed Publication // Stage 1

From the layout that I finished earlier I have printed out a black and white a5 version, primarily because I know I will be reprinting it and editing it slightly so I wanted to save print costs.

I actually really like the black and white print out and I will include one of these in the final outcomes on the proper stock.

Some of the pages still need a bit of editing, I still need to add page numbers and a contents page but overall I am very pleased with how the publication looks.

There are 3 blank pages at the back of the publication that I had to include so it would make 32 pages, one of which I am going to advertise the music blog, the other the phone app...and the final one I am not quite sure yet!

Some areas of the design I need to revisit;

Audiojack - the first page, it is a little dull at the moment and needs more on it.

I need to change the images to CMYK from RGB.

Audiojack - the quote on the interview page needs to have smaller ledding and kerning.

Check the DPI of some of the images as they have come out pixilated - if need be then find a better image...

These are two of the layouts which I like the most...and that I will refer back to when trying to improve the weaker pages of layout.

AMR // Layout Development

I have returned to the brief with the aim of being able to print it out and finish at leaste the first eiditon of it today. Below are screenshots of the developments. The layout I had before was very basic and I hadn't paid much attention to it, I was more concentrating on getting all of the information and the images on the page.

I have also added the last featured producer; Bakermat, a young producer from the Netherlands.

Audiojack // Interview Layouts

There seemed to be a lot more text for this page than there have been for any other pages so far, despite it fitting on two a4 sheets in a word document. This made it a little bit harder to try and find a layout for it. In the end (bottom 2 screenshots) I went through the content again and rephrased the questions as some of them were very wordy.

I was looking at the Loud and Quiet magazine when I made this, I was having a bit of an issue with fitting all the text on one page so I decided to play around with the number and width of columns in stead. Although this allowed me to fit all the text on the page easily, I don't feel it is very inviting to read and takes up too much of the white space, it feels more like an essay than an interview.

I looked back at the interview for Maya Jane Coles and the layout I had for that; which was 6 columns over the double page spread. I am still trying to make the most of the white space so I like to keep the height of the columns different, also making it more visually interesting. This was the better layout out of all the above designs, I just needed to work with widows.

I am keeping the typeface in Geosanslight for the moment until I find something better.

Looking back at some interviews in other magazines, they have picked out important quotes, so I found one that was the most relevant to Audiojack's rise to fame and placed it under the title. For the moment I am happy with this layout, I just need to go back and work out if it fit with the rest of the publication.

Audiojack // Biography Layouts

I have just been testing out various typefaces, leading, kerning, column widths, lengths and arrangements to see which layout will be the most interesting. I tried out a series of typefaces but in the end I feel that Geosanslight works throughout the article as it is modern, sans-serif but still very readable. I will continue to text out different typefaces and look at other publications to see what they use.

Audiojack Bibiography Layouts

There is still a lot of development to be made in terms of the layout, however I feel that the final layout design is the strongest. It is slightly different from a normal layout and I can use an image of the DJ duo in the centre of the text and experiment with the type heading above (and include their logo.)

I have also increased the kerning of the title and centralised it, making the whole page more balanced.

Worksheets // Publication Layout

I needed to work out by hand the order and the potential layout of the pages of the first publication so that I don't get confused. Publication design is something that is new to me, I have done layout before in the type module in my second year but this is something new!

I have decided to keep the pages simple and for each of the featured artists / producers I am going to have 3 double page spreads on them

  1. Introduction page on them - large scale photo, their name, a quote about or from them
  2. Biography, track listing and discography. The track listing will just feature the best of the songs
  3. Selected parts from the different interviews; I am going to combine the interviews I found for each of the artists and take the best bits from each, just as long as it makes sense!

I drew quick sketches of the different formats that I could use for the magazine but I thnk that I am going to use the a5 portrait format for at least two of the publications, and I thought that for the dj's / producers who I couldn't find much information on and who I really want to feature (like Bit Funk) I would use a slightly different format, portrait A4 size but the half the width. I will have to print it out and see weather this actually works, if not then I will just include more photographs and make it more typographic based and focusing on the tracks and discography rather than written content about them.
