At the moment I am having problems cutting down the different areas of the Yahoo that will attract 13-18 year olds. I would like to have 5 sections but I feel that It may have to be 6 sections...at present I have main sections of
- Music
- TV / Film
- Mail / Chat / Connect
- Questions / Answers / Help
- Gaming
- Sport
- Fashion
I read a survey yesterday saying how teenagers don't pay much attention to the news, they rarely read newspapers and a low percentage of them make a concious effort to go online and search the news.
When you search for 'Yahoo' the main topics / search areas that come up describing the website are...
- Mail
- News
- Answers
- My Yahoo
- Messenger
- Sport
Facebook is now a more popular website than Yahoo, primarily because of its social content and allowing people to meet and connect with eachother.
When people thing of Yahoo they think email and search engine rather than the rest of the topics that I have picked out.
I need to highlight the mail and messenger factor becauese hotmail is a more popular email account for that agegroup, and Yahoo is a bit of a hassle, google is for a higher age group and someone who is looking to appear more proffesional. I need to try and make the age group want to have a Yahoo main account rather than a hotmail, bring that 'craze' element back to the website, because once its seen as the thing to have, I feel it would kick off the rest of the pages.
I think the place to start with the brief is working out what Yahoo is a brand, what it represent and what people want from it, then to come up with a strapline for it that will interest the target audience as well as the current users.
